Robertson never tells a lie
Just heard Pat Robertson on a radio news report claiming he didn’t say assassination in regards to dealing with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Rather, he says he said our special ops forces should “take him out,” and that could refer to anything, such as the slightly lesser crime of kidnapping. Or maybe he just meant dinner and a movie.
It’s true, he did say “take him out” according to Time.com and other media outlets reporting on this. But let’s ignore the issue of whether it’s a smart and Christian thing to be seen as a proponent of kidnapping foreign leaders, and instead go to the tape for a little more of what Pat had to say:
“If he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,” Mr. Robertson said Monday on his show, “The 700 Club.” “It’s a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don’t think any oil shipments will stop.”
Unless the New York Times screwed up during the transcribing here (just dug up a CNN article on this with a video of Pat’s original remarks here, so nope), the sentence again goes: “If he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.”
So, Pat most emphatically did not say the word assassination. No, instead he used the word assassinate and followed it up with “I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.” But no where do you find him applying the word assassination in regards to Chavez. For a moment there I was afraid Pat was positive on “assassination.” Glad that misconception was cleared up.
Pat put out a press release today to clarify his remarks (and I assume the remarks of his remarks). Full text is here, but as I’m all about helping out, here’s the Shorter Pat Robertson Press Release: I said it but I didn’t mean it, because I was all pissed off and trying to get into Second City and stuff. So next time you find yourself adlibbing a threat to the President’s life in front of a gaggle of Secret Service agents, use the Pat Robertson defense. It’s all you need to keep from getting tossed to the ground and a gun butt rapped against the back of your head. I bet.

Okay, so now we don’t have a Christian fatwa after all?
At least with those radical middle eastern clerics, you always know exactly who’s on the Assassination To Do List.
True. It turns out our religious extremists are far more wishy-washy then their religious extremists. Under different circumstances, I’d be jealous.
