Doodle envy

posted on May 18, 2005

Something about myself I don’t believe I’ve mentioned previously on guff: I am a doodler. This hobby, or habit, goes back into early childhood when I displayed a glimmer of a hope of a chance of artistic talent whenever I picked up an art pencil or piece of charcoal. Never mind that I eventually decided to drop my sketching tools on a shelf and strike out to become a writer.

Another career decision that worked out really well for me.

So the art has been lost when I draw, but nevertheless there’s a stylized, idiosyncratic (and complicated) motif in my doodling. Though in some ways it’s but another attempt to trace shapes—some amorphous, some protogeometric—into faintly recognizable forms, or at least something pleasing to look at, I came upon it on my own, and I’ve never seen it used elsewhere. So there’s that for me to crow about. Eventually I may digitize a few and stick ‘em up here, for the idly curious.

Anyway, I brought this up in part to mention that I’ve been very much enjoying the recent burst of doodle-art over at ultramicroscopic. And if griff, the doodle designer and proprietor of that site, ever gets around to fixing his comments, I can let him freaking know that.
