WP theme: Boxy But Gold

posted on March 18, 2005  (Update: November 29, 2005)

I put together my first weblog theme for WordPress 1.5. This is just a taste, as I’m still working on the inside detailing (I’m done now; see July 11th update).

Views of guff in Boxy But Gold (non-permanent preview):

I submitted it to Alex King’s WordPress 1.5 Theme Competition. We’ll see how it fares (I could use the cash!). In the mean time, I’m looking to get as much input as possible in regards to how it appears on the Mac and Unix/Linux side of things before I give it a full and unequivocal place of download here. If you’re using Konqueror or Safari, or a current browser that isn’t Firefox, Netscape, Opera and Internet Explorer, I’d welcome the examination.

IE 5.5 users are welcome to call out any bugs found in that browser as well, but no guarantee I’ll do anything about them!

If you tried out the theme but tired of an auric (i.e. gold) guff, you can return to the green by clicking here — no longer necessary. I’ve switched to Ryan’s Preview Theme.
[Nov-29-2005]: A small but nasty comment count bug in the comments.php template made for unusual timestamps. Version 1.0.1 of the theme takes care of this; for the quick fix retrieve the updated comments.php template (boxy-but-gold-comments.zip). I also slipped in a thumbnail image of the theme for WordPress 2.0 support.
[Jul-11-2005]: About time I finished up the work on this and provided it as a download, eh? See the README.txt that comes with the zip file for infomation on the theme and a few included goodies. By the way, the theme didn’t win a thing. Boo!

I didn’t see anything wrong when I quickly checked the site using Safari, Firefox, Netscape and Explorer, all for Mac. I wish somebody could make a browser that combined the best parts of all them. Microsoft discontinued development for the Mac Explorer, but I’m still using it most of the time because of its ease in bookmark handling (I have 3,500). It doesn’t block ups, which sucks. Safari loads web pages fast but is slower than Explorer for big downloads with a fast connection. It does block pop-ups, though. I don’t know if Firefox is faster than the others, but its bookmarks are easier to manage than with Safari and it also blocks pop-ups. I have to switch between them all sometimes because some websites have compatibility problems. I’d definitely pay for a browser that could do everything. Anyway, the site looks fine at first glance.

Kevin, thanks for the input; and thanks to those who’ve contacted me privately. The theme seems to be lacking in bad habits, so I’ll finish up my polishing and get it out there, ‘officially.’

I certainly feel your pain in regards to the technology of browers. The minor differences in standards support, how one handles image placement better, another downloads, and yet a third automation of certain processes certainly makes one wonder that if the Internet really is a *super* highway, why are our vehicles always popping their tires, hitting the divider and never able to reach 55mph? All right, make that 90kph.

I really like Boxy But Gold theme. I just finished setting it up on my eyesapart.com site. Then I ran across this:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Search_Engine_Optimization_for_Wordpress

Is there a way to rearrange thigs so the content will be at the top to optomize for search engines?

Thanks!
Lois

I have installed ‘Boxy But Gold’ in my localhost. When I select either «Sidebar->Meta->RSS» or «Sidebar->Meta->Comments RSS» I see a pop-up: ‘feed no es un protocolo conocido’ and it means something like ‘Feed is an unknown protocol’. Would you mind to post something about this issue?. Thanks.

He instalado ‘Boxy But Gold’ en mi máquina. Gracias.

Problem!
Firefox does not show Boxy But Gold theme but with Mozilla and Galeon there is no problem. I don’t want to think what happens with IE.

Thanks.

Re kcyap’s comment above. The real person behind the posting of daily entries in 2dayblog.com is Malaysian Justin Yap. Justin’s own website is kcyap.com but he committed a wordpress contest scam earlier this year and he is now hiding behind the 2dayblog.com website. His website kcyap.com is now redirected to 2dayblog.com. If you type “kcyap +scam” in Google or Yahoo search box, you can view pages relating to the scam committed by kcyap.

I really like Boxy But Gold for my blog. I am having a slight problem adding a Google skyscraper in the sidebar using Adsense Deluxe. I would like for it to appear in a box like the calendar and other items. I can copy the format for the box, but can’t seem to get the code to show up in the box. Any recommendations?
