Poem of the Week: The Angels Are Not Coming

The word is out all over
Of a fear as cold as snow;
It’s a chant of major import -
The angels do not seem to show.

The parents are expectant,
While their children kneel to pray;
But their patience must continue,
For the angels are not on the way.

You may hope for wings of gossamer,
Breath the scent of unleavened bread;
But you think instead the unthinkable:
The angels surely must be dead.

Why do they fail the faithful
And the ones who are in need;
Were they cast from our endeavors
By the evils grown from our seed?
What holds the astral natives
From appearing in the sky?
Is it The Everlasting Battle,
Or an order from on High?

The answer to our queries
will most likely never come;
Perhaps for our ignorance
in heavens’ guiding rules of thumb.

But there is one indicator,
a bit of data on which to chew:
Turns out the angels’ cable bill
Is extremely overdue.
